When you are driving, turn the music all the way up. Make sure it is very loud. So loud, your thoughts become inaudible, and the clamoring noise inside your head is now silent, subject to the infectious sound that clouds the air. You will begin to notice things. Like how the sun pays close attention to everyone and everything . You will characterize the hills and family of trees as they recede into a lonesome setting and your journey continues. All the guitars, pianos, drum sets and trumpets carry you forward, and suddenly you are no longer going sixty-five miles per hour, but much slower. The tempo of the song imposes a lyrical tyranny, a possessing enchantment that pulls you away and yet closer towards an undefined feeling that reawakens your once ashen fire inside. The car, and all it’s machinery disintegrates into a ghost. It’s parts and inner-workings dismantled, consumed and haunted by the sorrow and pain of an all-too-true chorus. You notice the echoes of your favorite song begin to resonate through you, as if all along they were lost and scared until they felt the warmth of a familiar place, and you are no longer a stranger, but a part of the haunting. Sometimes we have to keep on driving, even of there is no evident final destination, even if we are approaching nothingness, we don’t allow ourselves to yield or slow down. We refuse to separate our silence from the sound, so we press our heels against the pedal, and wait for the engine to take us to invisible cities with invisible people that way, we do not have to give up our governing silence. We are lonely kings and queens, lost in an empty kingdom, with nothing left, but the sounds we used like efficient armor from bullets, dishonesty, heart break and the inevitable truth that all things must quiet down at one point. But we will never say these things, we will never disrupt our own silence when there is music in the air, when the only song playing is going to end soon. We remain silent, we keep moving, to the slow, slow beat of a very loud haunting we do not wish to avoid.
